Re: Strange spam hyperlinks in IE ? ? ?

it seem to be the problem with the website. The website owner seems to want to make extra money by posting some affiliate links on his website in order to take his website's visitors of the affiliated survey or website that will earn him some dollars. I guess this is not the problem with your brows...

Re: LOGIN & REGISTRATION Script Tutorial

Always glad to help a student who wants to learn! Let me offer a general comment that may be useful in many situations: Try not to get so buried in coding details that you lose sight of the actual objectives--for security matters, always ask yourself exactly what you are trying to protect against be...

Re: LOGIN & REGISTRATION Script Tutorial

Really useful and easy-to-learn tutorial. I followed all of your tips here and applied them in my current project. I have a question though on Forgotten Passwords. My project is OFFLINE - units are connected only thru LAN - so I cannot use the Send to Email approach. One solution I can think of is ...

Re: when would be a time to realize I am too stupid to learn

A few words regarding MS Access: I was teaching dBase II when Microsoft released Access, around 1994--gosh, that's 20 years ago!--and was asked to design a course for it at the college. I taught Access courses for nearly a decade, while also designing Access databases for consulting clients. So I ha...

Re: when would be a time to realize I am too stupid to learn

I think I am beginning to understand your situation. As a former teacher (of MS Access, for years), my assessment is that you are probably fully capable of learning programming, but you have adopted a route to learning that is very treacherous. The Internet is a wonderful storehouse--but, of what? Y...

Re: when would be a time to realize I am too stupid to learn

I would say that you are surely not stupid, if you have worked so hard at learning and you can read scripts and understand what each element is. If you have no previous background in programming, it isn't so surprising that you haven't caught on to the way of thinking that you need to have, to write...

Re: How to track spam or failed log in attemps?

Good going! You certainly want to know the IP addresses, but I didn't find them very helpful in either blocking them (they are probably coming from innocent computers that were infected by a botnet and will rarely repeat) or in complaining to their ISP (for similar reasons). In any case, you're pick...

Re: Hacker posting to my website [RESOLVED--well, sort of]

Tex, do the posts include URL links? That's the most common kind of spam. If they do, how about just rejecting any post that includes "http://"? I did that on my site and I haven't had a single bad post get thru since I did that. If you don't need to allow legitimate links, that might be a...

Re: Hacker posting to my website [RESOLVED--well, sort of]

Hi Celauran. Happy New Year! :-) You're right, that's the downside of free email accounts like Gmail. To clarify Tex's post for anyone who didn't read his own thread, it's a PHPBB forum and Tex is a vb.net developer, just getting his feet wet with Linux and PHP. His original thread is http://forums....

Re: Hacker posting to my website [RESOLVED--well, sort of]

Yeah, you're really getting hit! I'm not surprised it's Chinese, there's a lot of very active spammers there (well, it's a huge country!). Are there URL links in them? I'd say there's no point in complaining to anybody, they're not going to do anything to them. Better to concentrate on how to detect...

Re: How to track spam or failed log in attemps?

I never learned Perl, so I can't even read that code very well, but as I read the abuse.net webpage, I believe it is just returning the administrative/technical contact info from a requested domain's DNS record. I'm not sure how helpful that would be, since most of these hackers seem to be from coun...

Re: Hacker posting to my website [UPDATE]

It has been well over a month and I haven't seen a single additional bad post. I'm not sure that anything I did resulted in the improvement, though. This is more or less what happened 3 years ago when the site experienced a similar attack. I suspect that either the hacker has been caught, or that he...

Re: How to track spam or failed log in attemps?

Congratulations! Sorry we didn't come up with any real suggestions to help you. I think some of the guys are taking a break during the holidays. I did something like that earlier this year. I have a U.S. Navy ship's memorial site with a "ship's log book" where former crew members or their ...

Re: How to track spam or failed log in attemps?

Maybe one of the administrators here who is familiar with PHPBB could jump in here and tell us if there is already a logfile that would save Tex from creating his own, also whether it is practical to modify PHPBB source code for something like this? Tex, welcome to Linux and PHP! :-) Once you begin ...

Re: PHP PAGE CODE Q

First, does the file that contains that code have a filetype of .php? It must have. Then, you are using the function header(....) almost at the bottom of your code. That won't work. The header() function can only be used BEFORE anything has been sent to the browser--even a blank line! Once your PHP ...
