Attach in-memory file to e-mail

Post by syam »

Hi,

I am trying to generate a text or html file attachment dynamically within php script and intending to send it as an attachment with e-mail. I have tried the example available on the net including temfile(), php://memory et al as documented at php official website. So far I have no luck in achieving the above objective. I have used the following script, which is sending the e-mail and attachment, but there is no text within the attachment.

Can anyone please clarify if the below approach is correct?

Code: Select all

<?php

$file = tmpfile();
fwrite($file, "writing to tempfile");
fseek($file, 0);
echo fread($temp, 1024);

$fileatt = $file; // Path to the file
$fileatt_type = "text/html"; // File Type
$fileatt_name = "test.txt"; // Filename that will be used for the file as the attachment

$email_from = "myemail@email.com"; // Who the email is from
$email_subject = "Test Mail"; // The Subject of the email
$email_txt = "Just Testing"; // Message that the email has in it

$email_to = "myemail@email.com"; // Who the email is too

$headers = "From: ".$email_from;

$semi_rand = md5(time());
$mime_boundary = "==Multipart_Boundary_x{$semi_rand}x";

$headers .= "\nMIME-Version: 1.0\n" .
"Content-Type: multipart/mixed;\n" .
" boundary=\"{$mime_boundary}\"";

$email_message .= "This is a multi-part message in MIME format.\n\n" .
"--{$mime_boundary}\n" .
"Content-Type:text/html; charset=\"iso-8859-1\"\n" .
"Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit\n\n" .
$email_message . "\n\n";

$data = chunk_split(base64_encode($data));

$email_message .= "--{$mime_boundary}\n" .
"Content-Type: {$fileatt_type};\n" .
" name=\"{$fileatt_name}\"\n" .
//"Content-Disposition: attachment;\n" .
//" filename=\"{$fileatt_name}\"\n" .
"Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64\n\n" .
$data . "\n\n" .
"--{$mime_boundary}--\n";

$ok = @mail($email_to, $email_subject, $email_message, $headers);

if($ok) {
echo "<font face=verdana size=2>The file was successfully sent!</font>";
} else {
die("Sorry but the email could not be sent. Please go back and try again!");
}
fclose($file); // this removes the file
?>

You don't need a temporary file.

Code: Select all

"Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64\n\n" .
$data . "\n\n" .
"--{$mime_boundary}--\n";
That $data is whatever the file contents are. If they're in memory then you can just use the appropriate variable there.

There are several problems with your code, the most obvious being that you use unitialized variable here:

Code: Select all

$data = chunk_split(base64_encode($data));

Here $data was never set to anything useful before, thus (most probably) you're getting empty string as a result.

Another problem is that you confuse file handles for file paths:

Code: Select all

$file = tmpfile();
//....
$fileatt = $file; // Path to the file? - WRONG

$file here is a file handle, not a path to file:
PHP Manual wrote: tmpfile():
Creates a temporary file with a unique name in read-write (w+) mode and returns a file handle.
And lastly, as tasairis pointed out, you don't need the file at all.
