Hi! phpBB (what you're currently looking at) is available free from http://www.phpbb.com , and it seems to be a favourite among many opensource programmers. If you're willing to pay (~$100) there's vBulletin, avialable from http://www.vbulletin.com/ , and many more (http://www.yabb.info , http://www.xmbforum.com/ , http://www.minibb.net)

Here's my list, in the order I'd recommend:

phpBB
vBulletin
YABB
XMB
miniBB

There are also a few more I've only used once or twice, like Infopop's board, burning board, electrifiedforum, gossamer threads, et al.

i've heard a lot of raving about invision but never seen it in use.

from what i've seen, i'd say go with phpbb, and barring that, vbulliten.

personally i don't like yabb

YaBB has by far the best "hacks" management. I mean, come on. You just download the patch, go to the administration panel, and click "load".

Something phpBB's been attempting for years, but still lacks. If you'll be customizing your board more than once or twice, it's something to keep in mind.
