now that I have a database to work with using MySQL with 20MB of room, I can now consider new ideas

i have noticed some blogs using Wordpress and this site uses phpBB etc so there are a lot of options available

I have used phpBB in the past, ended up fight spammers tooth an nail, it was a real hardball issue and I am still on their forum helping other with the problem

now the fun, what can I use for web sites that is safe from spam etc

Nothing is entirely safe from spam. If there was something then everybody would be using it ;)

phpBB and vBulletin are the two big players for free PHP forum software. They, and everybody else, have tools to help combat spam.

I noticed a scary report that some miscreant has developed ransomware for wordpress sites, attacking open source, now i have seen it all

I am going to evaluate wordpress, see what it can do from the basic package. Worst case is I nuke it and go back to the old ways.

WordPress is one of the most vulnerable PHP applications out there. Mostly because it's so easy for people who have no idea what they're doing to write plugins for it.
