What good resources (books, online tutorials, etc) are out there to help me learn to use PHP and jquery, and what programs do I need to edit, write and upload what I've done?

For PHP, check out the beginner series at Laracasts.
For JavaScript, check out Codecademy and then graduate to Eloquent JavaScript. jQuery isn't really needed anymore, but if you're working with code that already supports it, there's always Try jQuery.
