Hi there.

Not sure if this is the right location to ask this, but something is bugging me.

One of our websites ranks really high for many of it's internal pages, when doing a localized search. ie. if you are in the USA, California Carpet Cleaner, for example (tho we are in the UK).

The trouble is, the homepage in question cannot get to number one; 2 or 3, but not 1. I think I know why, but I wonder if the change I made, is a bad one.

We had 6 pages for locational pages, ie, /los-angeles-carpet-cleaner/, /palmdale-carpet-clearner/ and so on.
The trouble was, these pages were pointing to a temporary domain, like new.domain.com/palmdale-carpet-cleaner/, so were 404ing.

But on spotting this, I did two things. I removed those links in the footer (on all pages), but then in the Locations menu, I changed them from that to /locations/los-angeles/, for example, and added 6 301 redirections.

So six pages that had the core keywords in them, have now gone. They only appear in H1, H2, H3 and alt tags etc on the homepage.

But since doing this the page has dropped a place. Now this could be just 'Google juggling', and it's reindexing so might just bump up.

MY QUESTION IS: is it GOOD or BAD to have your core keywords in additional slugs and H1 tags on your site? (with the possibly except of blog posts) or is it a good thing? I was always told it should be unique. So if 'carpet cleaner' is on the H1 on your homepage, is should be absolutely in NO other H1 or slug on the entire site.

you might want to rebuild you site to be more clear with your target markets

redirect other non target markets to the homepage
