does anyone know of a way to communicate with aim to see if a certain user is online?

Check over a hotscripts, I've seen several status checkers for msn, aim and icq

the easiest (imho) is to use a script that knows how to talk with a jabber client (aim transport) or with a irc client (bitlbee -> aim)
