For windows there is advanced attributes, security attributes, user attributes etc.

eh, no bueno... no bueno.
I think I'm giving up... I'm going to just attempt to install mysql again. I know I'm doing one little tiny thing wrong with the installation... I just don't know what. Anybody know where to find a detailed installation guide for mysql?

If you go to 'Tools, Folder Options, View' and then untick the 'Use Simple File Sharing' and then click 'OK' then right-click on a file you can set it's permissions.
There is a tab in the file properties window called 'Security' which allows you to choose which things are allowed to happen to the file. This is how you chmod in Windows.
If you need some screenshots on what I am talking about I will write a little step-by-step for you.

well, it didn't work.. there is no option for simple file sharing... at least not on my computer. Do I need to have sharing enabled?

btw, i'm on winxp home... not pro. so... i don't believe i can do anything other than Simple File Sharing.
