wget, dif, and url watch

Ok, I am a major newbie at this PHP thing. I looked through the search and I don't think this was mentioned. If it was, sorry.
What I am trying to figure out is if there is any PHP scripts I can use to run a url watch on my own server. I have tried using services that do this, but as soon as I input all the url's I want watched, the site always goes under. So now I am trying to do it all 'in house'
I have heard about wget & dif commands, but can't seem to find out enough info on them to do anything about it.
I am running a Red Hat Linux/Apache server with the latest version of PHP (#4 since 5 still has issues).
Any help with finding a script that would do this would be great. Thanks in advance.
