I want to display a php calendar in a monthly view on my page left hand side. What I want from this calendar are:

1. each date is clickable. When it is clicked, the information stored in the database based on this date will be retrived and displayed on the right side of the page.
2. allow user to move backwards and forwards a month at a time in a month view. But by doing this, it shouldn't change any infomration displayed on the right side of the page.

I've started the basic coding here. Can somebody give me some hint on how to achieve these functions?

Here are mine code:
1. calendarTest.php

Code: Select all

<?php
include ("includes/calendar.php");
?>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>Untitled Document</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" href="css/calendar.css" />
</head>

<body>
<table width="100%" border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2">
  <tr>
    <td>
<?php

// If no month/year set, use current month/year
$d = getdate(time());

if ($month == "")
{
    $month = $d["mon"];
}
if ($year == "")
{
    $year = $d["year"];
}

$cal = new Calendar;
echo $cal->getMonthView($month, $year);
?></td>
    <td>Information will be pulled out from database based on a particular date clicked. </td>
  </tr>
</table>

</body>
</html>

2. code: calendar.php

Code: Select all

There's probably two dozen or more PHP calendar scripts easily available by searching Google, so unless you're just doing this to learn PHP, I'd suggest you just use a debugged script like http://www.easyphpcalendar.com/.

Those calendar scripts I searched online do things far more than what I need. At this point I really want to do is this:

allow user to move backwards and forwards a month at a time in a month view. But by doing this, it shouldn't change any infomration displayed on the right side of the page.

Can somebody show me how? Stuck!

I think you are saying that you do not want to reload the web page. In that case, you must use a client-side language, like Javascript, since PHP is server-side language and has no means to detect when a user clicks a button, since it is no longer present in the script, once the page is sent to the browser. You might try Googling for javascript calendar script or ajax calendar script.

Can I use frame to achieve this reloading part of the web page instead of doing research on Javascript calendar? My PHP calendar works fine. So I still want to keep using my php script.

Just want to make sure before spending time on frames. Thanks!

I don't use frames and I believe the current web philosophy is to avoid using frames. As a strictly personal opinion, I would make such a decision based on what will produce the best user experience, not on my reluctance to learn something new. If you know anything at all about Javascript, Ajax will be easy to learn (it's NOT a new language, just a way to use one particular Javascript object), and your calendar can still be written in PHP on the server side, to respond to the Ajax request, without reloading the current web page.
