Pagination

Hey folks, I'm a complete PHP newb... I have been reading Head First PHP & MySql and I actually have been learning alot in the past couple of weeks... The Devnetwork forum has been very helpful and has helped me solve many issues that I had in mind along with new ideas.

Im working on creating a site where users can submit stories and have it displayed with numbers of pages... i have the pages working going up and down no problem, but the issue is that the data is displayed on all pages...

How ever I've been stuck on pagination, before you go on... yes I have been searching google to all hell.. I have attempted to use many different tutorials but I always seem to find a new brick wall. I've searched this forums on pagination and it's very hard to find information regarding pagination most of the post have a reference to search for pagination..

I'm not looking for someone to completely re-write the code i have below but any reference would be greatly appreciated

thanks for all your help and support

Code: Select all

<html><head>
<link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"></head>

<?php
include '/phpinclude/mysqlconfig.php';
include '/phpinclude/mysqlopendb.php';
?>

<?php

    $tbl_name="stories";        //your table name
    // How many adjacent pages should be shown on each side?
    $adjacents = 3;

    /*
       First get total number of rows in data table.
       If you have a WHERE clause in your query, make sure you mirror it here.
    */
    $query = "SELECT COUNT(*) as num FROM $tbl_name";
    $total_pages = mysql_fetch_array(mysql_query($query));
    $total_pages = $total_pages[num];

    $targetpage = "multi3.php";     //your file name  (the name of this file)
    $limit = 2;                                 //how many items to show per page
    $page = $_GET['page'];

Remove the query at the end and move the while() loop up to right after the query with the 'LIMIT' clause in it.

Thanks for the input, belive it or not I was able to get it working... this is what I modified at the bottom.

Code: Select all

    <?php
        while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result))
        {

        echo "Story # : {$row['story_id']} <br>" ;
        echo "Story : {$row['story_text']} <br>" ;
        echo "Submited By : {$row['story_nick']}<br><br><br> <br>" ;
        }
    ?>
