Vertical Web Design

Post by kremo5le »

Hey guys,

I'm going to design a site that uses the "vertical" design, the new trend. Check out some sites here: http://www.webdesignertrends.com/2011/0 ... -vertical/

Now, I'm pretty sure this is done with JavaScript and/or jQuery (or is jQuery the "son" of JavaScript?).

Am I on the right path?
Where is more information about these sites?
Are they ALL vertical designed websites HTML5?

THANKS! :D

Here are more sites (this time in English!): http://www.onextrapixel.com/2009/06/26/ ... ng-effect/. Most of them are NOT superb like the post wants you to believe but I want you to get the idea.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I don't see anything so unusual, or attractive, about this design approach. It seems to be accomplished using the jQuery library (some call it a "framework" but I think that's just applying a fancy name to a rather ordinary set of javascript functions). I am not aware of any 'trend' to such a design gimmick. If your objective is to create a website that is strikingly different than what most viewers are accustomed to, you could certainly try it out, but my personal opinion is that it is mostly a waste of your time trying to learn something that probably will not have much applicability in the real world.

For now I'm going to stick with no on vertical design. The example i viewed (vanityclaire) made me wonder how a mobile user would manage when viewing it as the novelty of it would probably be lost. Maybe for tablets it could work :?:

Thank you for both your answers!

There is obviously a market for these websites, otherwise the would not exist. I think you, Califdon, have a 100% valid opinion but you are thinking in terms of the design YOU like and find more useful, not a design OTHERS like. Again, why are they out there. My guess is that they will become more popular. Here's another example: http://www.thesixtyone.com/. I'm sure if I ask this question in a forum that's aimed to the graphic arts I would not get the same responses. Same thing on a forum that's aimed to bands and musicians.

The cell phone issue is valid too, but wouldn't you design a cell phone version of the site? Why limit the design? The answer is to design the site and then, in about 2 months, check Google Analytics and see how many people are using cell phones to see the website (this is what I do, in fact, and usually is 2% or less).

I think the concept itself is a bad idea for cellphone browsers. ;)

Yes it's good to have an alternate stylesheet for mobile browsers but not all sites do, as you mention in your answer ,it depends on the amount of visitors viewing your website using a certain type of platform so it's upto the designer to make such a choice (based on information at their disposal).

Vertical Web Design - Cell Phone Design?

Post by kremo5le »

Thank you Social. I own an HTC Android and when I do appreciate websites like Wikipedia to have the "phone version" of their site it gets old reading on that tiny screen. Nothing like your "old school" monitor.

If we take Avatar's vision of the future, monitors and tablets will be king.

Going back to VERTICAL DESIGN, what do you think about it?

RE: Vertical design - Yes if i view the site on a tablet, no if i have to use a desktop or a laptop to view it :)
