uh, good question. Can't really tell you but with
"Times New Roman, Times, serif" you're probably on the safe side

Try to avoid using serif fonts on the web though, not only will TNR make your site look like it was designed in the mid 90's

, serif fonts are generally accepted (talking from experience of dealing with accessibility people like the RNIB) to be more difficult to read on screen than san-serif (Arial, Verdana et. al.) fonts.

One problem you might have is that on new Macs running OS X, if the user chooses not to install MSIE, they will be missing some fonts, more notably Verdana and Arial.
Matt Jalbert wrote to me with an interesting observation. While recently upgrading to OS X 10.3, Jalbert decided to not install Internet Explorer 5 (which you can remove in the ‘Customize’ window). After his installation was complete, and Jalbert opened Safari to surf the web, he was greeted with an ugly surprise — all the type was in either Times or Helvetica. After searching around both his system and user font folders, he found the problem: there wasn’t a trace of Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Arial, or Georgia anywhere.

That's just bad!! Not having Arial or Verdana as standard on any modern OS is just stupid considering nearly every website uses one or the other.
I take it that Microsoft have some sort of patent on Arial and Verdana and were too tight to let them be released on the Mac without any MS products?
This is why the web is so damn difficult to develop for... all of these big corporations acting like they were 5 years old....... "it's mine", "it's mine", "let goooo", "no", "i'll tell on you"............ etc.

Yeah, Microsoft paid some font designer thousands to create those fonts for them in the 90s.
Who knows if there'll be a work around in the next version of OS X.

The funny thing is that Mac had/has the rights to the Helvetica font and because Microsoft couldn't get hold of it Microsoft had Arial created, which is basically a rip-off of the original Helvetica font.
..and so the cycle continues..

I think that both Mac and Msoft should relinquish their rights on Arial, Verdana, and Helvetica. Everyone uses them and there really isn't any point keeping them close to their chests.
It's like this stupid patent thing with the GIF format which is stopping the GIF'd up GD lib being released until mid 2004.
