mail link in differnt form

im make this copy of a site for my boss and the person how did it does all the mail links like
mailto:%70%72%6F%70%65%72%74%69%65%73%40%72%61%79%73%79%73%74%65%6D%2E%63%6F%6D
now i cant remember what that is called, but i know what its doing, but is there any reason for doing a mail link like this?

Not really, im sure spam bots can read email addresses in hex form.

There is one way to keep spam bots from reading anything. But it also keeps various web crawlers out of your site. There is a file in your root directory called robots.txt and it contains permissions for all or parts of your site.
