Quite obviously, you need to stop using tables. Here's some sites to get you of this crack^H^H^H^H^H habit.

Why you shouldn't use tables:
http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/tables.html#h-11.1
http://www.hotdesign.com/seybold/
http://www.456bereastreet.com/archive/2 ... he_tables/

CSS related:
http://www.csszengarden.com/
http://www.alistapart.com/
http://www.brainjar.com/
http://www.css-discuss.incutio.com/

If the black bar is still there, I'll take a look at the source (yes, table layouts hurt me eyes).

On an unrelated note, what's this?

Code: Select all

<tr>
    <td bgcolor=&quote;#000000&quote;>

    </td>
  </tr>
Or this? (yeah, the other one should collapse)

Code: Select all

<td bgcolor=&quote;#000000&quote; colspan=&quote;8&quote; style=&quote;margin-top: 4&quote; width=&quote;919&quote;>
    <p align=&quote;center&quote;>&nbsp;</td>
  </tr>

easy way to solve this problem, open source, copy and paste it into a WYSIWYG (dreamweaver for eg) highlight the offending area in "design view" switch to
"code view" you will now have highlighted the offending markup

strange as you can make table designs look exactly the same as CSS based and in most cases much better except for the code

as a side note, when you are dealing with loops of content to be printed with page it is 500% much easier to do it using tables, there is nothing wrong with tables when they are used correctly.

plus my $0.02 here, flame away but it is a well known fact that CSS is highly unreliable across multiple browsers, as web-designers we should not be saying "CSS only, Table designs suck", what about accessibility? old browsers?

It seems to me the whole industry conflicts itself, on one hand people say move away from CSS to conform to standards, however conforming to these standards breaks many accessibility issues.

I design CSS sites, but only when i see fit, you need to know when to differentiate between when its needed and when its not.

He meant trying to read the code I think :)

The whole point of CSS is to increase accessibilty. It is a FAR MORE well known fact that table based layouts dramatically decrease accessibilty (screen readers - wtf is this mess :wink: )

Also, if you stick to W3C valid CSS you don't have to much trouble with compatibility. Admittedly you do need to think a bit more about the structure of your document but you end up with a far cleaner code. There differences across browsers but it's pretty easy to get used to them and know how to write the code so that it works in all of them.

Loops + tables: Well of course :D much easier.

My opinion.... tables for data presentation, CSS for layouts.

I agree, which is why maybe 70% of my designs are CSS dependant, however in the other 30% of cases, i simply cannot use it, whether it be because i need to attract the largest user base possible (old browsers inc) or various other errors produced by this method. Also dont forget, users can disable or use a completely different CSS file, making your site look like plain text.

It is actually a W3C recommendation not to make you site CSS dependant, so it fails gracefully without the use of CSS, most sites when this happens do not "fail gracefully"

also the whole pixel based system the browsers use really <span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> me off when measurements are different

how is making seperate stylesheets for different browsers just to make a site look the same and bug-free a good thing?
