Norton Internet Security

Hi,

I have noticed a few issues with sites I have developed when viewed on a PC running NIS (Norton Internet Security). I have done some research and discovered that Norton removes GIFs that are a certain size as it assumes they are ads.

This makes my sites look rubbish! More worryingly, it has removed a login form. This means that users who have NIS running are presented with a blank page and no where to login.

Most of the recommendations on other sites and posts with this issue recommend altering Norton settings to allow sites. This is a pain in the arse for users of my sites, is there any way of altering html / javascript / post headers to make them Norton friendly?

Any one else had these issues?
Thanks,
Ed.

Try converting to png's. With pngcrush, most pngs are higher quality, and smaller than the same image in gif's.

Admittedly, I don't have NIS to experiment with, but thats one thing you could try.

thanks for the reply. I'll be doing that on my next project, and using jpgs a lot more too. I still need to get round the form issue though.

I have found a nice piece of javascript that runs if Norton decides to intervine with a page - it pops up an alert explaining how sh*t norton is!

The person that posted
Symantec Norton antivirus has a very stupid implementation. It blocks all links used in Javascript, that have either the word "ad" or "ads" as part of the URL!
In that forum topic is wrong. It is not something that is in Nortons Antivirus. That is in the Norton Firewall portion of NIS. I have the latest Norton Antivirus and do not have any of the problems people are reporting in that thread.

Now I will say this Norton's Internet Security package is a pile of steaming dog poop. The only thing in it that is good or excellent is Nortons Antivirus. The rest of the package is a nightmare. The firewall portion of NIS is one of the WORST ever created. Honestly if everyone would uninstall everything related to NIS except for the antivirus potion they wouldn't have any problems. Then install a free firewall like ZoneAlarm.

I like Nortons products but their NIS package is about the most worthless thing I have ever had the displeasure of encountering.

In my personal site, when I wanted to include a banner with the keyword banner as image name, it is blocked by Norton.
