Do search engines still use meta tags?

I know Google doesn't use meta tags (well at least not in the way they were originally intended), but do other search engines use meta tags? What do I need to do in order for Google and Yahoo and the other 2 or 3 semi-major search engines to find my page's title and description? I've always been able to get a decent page rank by using semantic markup and using the h1, h2, h3, and title tags correctly, but what else can I do? I'm building an ecommerce site and I just want to make sure my product pages get listed well. Thanks guys! :)

From my understanding, it is considered an obsolete method of search engine friendliness. People still use them, but I'm not so sure search engines trust them anymore since people began to realize "hey, i can put ninja in my metatags for my cookie shop and ninja's will find me!" =)
