best way...to design...

Hello,

I am going to redesign my website, but all the top sites use the same old design, but I have a good idea on what way i should design the site, but i need your help, before i create it.

Here is a basic layout, of the site including the banner, links that will be involved.
Banner, Poll, News

Quests, Skills, Special Reports, Maps, Guilds, Location.

NPC Database, Item database, Monster database.

Contact us, Dsigs, Quest calc, Calculators, Interactive Map.

RPG1, RPG2, RPG3

Forums, Chat Room, Guest Book, Topsites, Desktop.
Each button, (all the links, from quests to desktop, will be 167 x 66 - size can change) They will have big bold text, and an image, Unsure on what just yet.

That reminds me, what are your suggestions for each of the links?

I have not found, any site that has the design that i am looking for.

Would it be best to create the basic web page, and get all the colours sorted out, before i even think about creating the links?

I have never designed a website, where i have not been told, what way they want it, now this site is my own, i dont know what way i should do it.

I also want this design to look good, from a very small resolution, to the biggest. 800x600 at least that small, but as the resolution gets bigger, the data can move accross, and still look just as good.

The reason why i said 800x600 is that is the size my laptop will go, the very smallest setting.

Anyquestions?

What you ask is very broad and general. We can help better if you ask small, specific questions. Helps when you show a piece of code in which a problem might be.

first of all, the design i want to create will have all the links as buttons.

each button, will be, 167x66 (but can change)

Each button will have a square 3D image, which will represent the contents of the link, eg, forums, could have 4 people with speach marks, comming out of their mouth. Then Forums in bold letters. talking up the remading space.

The Questions
Each set of buttons, will have its own section, but, i want to know, how can i make each section, fit in any resolution?

What colours are best to use?

answering what colors you should use is pretty subjective... it depends on what you're doing. A better question might be, what kind of navigation system/design should you use?

If so, I would recomend ditching the square image links. I would have 6 menues, "Information", "Ingame Info", "Data Collection", etc. Then on mouseover I would have a list drop down with all the links.

You can do this easily with css or if you'd prefer you can do it with javascript. Actually, a combination of both would probably be easiest.

Usually I put a menu bar like this across the top of my pages, and then if I REALLY want images (not usually), I'll put the image buttons down along the left side. Often at the bottom of the page I'll put a link to every important page as well.

In general, if I'm confused about site layout and what looks best where... I'll sit down with a good old-fashioned piece of paper and a pencil, and just sketch about twenty different designs. Then code the one that looks coolest. :D
