Need Linux Admin help BAD!

All of the sudden, when we tried to use ls it caused segmentation faults. We restarted the box, or attempted to and it won't make it through the restart. Our primary thought is bad memory but what else could cause a problem like this? Anyone run into this problem before? We could really use some insight as to what the problem is.
We swapped in some new RAM and the computer gets to setting the host name and says that step is ok but then hangs before the next step. A Ctrl+C with sometims get it to go to the next step but the computer doesn't make much further before fully locking up. Any further advice short of a re-format would be appreciated.
