personal project help. (Audio interpretation)

Hi Everyone.

Recently I came up with an idea for a personal project for myself, and was hoping some of you knowledgeable people may be able to help me / point me in the right direction.

My project revolves around my addiction for music on vinyl.
I am interested in the idea of data collection, and visual representation of data.
To put it in simple terms, I want to collect information about the vinyl records that I play on my system at home and based on the accumulated data, create visual output to represent my trends as the time passes. I want to have a Last.fm-like tracker on my analogue music. The big part of the project, is that I want it to be automated, I don't want to keep track of what I listen to, and how long for.

I did a search, and Shazam (iphone app that records a segment of a song and tells you what it is) does not have an API that I can work with.

My question is, are you aware of any applications like Shazam that are opensource and/or have an API i can work with?
Any other ways I can work around this?

Also, I wasn't sure where to post this, so I hope I picked the right spot, if not, please move this to a more appropriate place.

Thanks,

Victor
