Voice Recognition Admin Site?

Post by malcolmboston »

last night i was thinking...........

ok, its an everyday situation, your in your car cruising, with your laptop on your passenger seat, you need to check for e-mails, new clients, etc, but that would mean stopping the car!!

well, how cool would it be if you just talked and your machine did it for eg
you say:
open http://www.mycompany.com
login admin area
username mal
password mal
exec mailclient
count new mail
open mail number x

and your machine did it!!!

how cool would this be!? the possibilities are endless, i am really looking into developing something like this (would be mainly browser orientated) for my next personal project

i have a few questions......

1) What language would i require?
2) does anyone have any experience (at all) with this sort of thing
3) are there any open-source app's i can examine?

Thanks in advance
(apologies to bech)

I am currently building a CarPuter.

Basically, this is an 8" touch-screen moulded into the dash of my new car and a PC runing WinXP Lite that will sit in the boot of my car with a 200gig hard drive full of MP3s and Movies along with mapping software and GPS. Can also have funky winamp plugins running whilst playing my MP3's. Basically, it can do whatever a home PC does

It will also include wireless LAN, so when i pull into my drive, i can update software and transfer new music from the comfort of my house.

Also, gonna fit a tiny web-cam in the back window so i can view the screen whilst reversing.

The possibilities are endless!

I may custome build a case, to eventuall fit the comp in the glove compartment so less wiring everywhere.

I am looking into the voice recognition. It is pretty easy to do because there is loads of voice recognition software out there!

I have seen it discussed on the forums over at http://www.mp3car.com

Yeah, it is just like setting up a home computer. THe only quite tricky part is getting the power to the computer. You need a special PSU if you wanna do it correctly that connect to your ignition. This will boot your comp and shut it down properly.

GPS is easy. You can get usb GPS receivers really cheap and most mapping software support GPS devices these days. Autoroute etc.

all i needed really was the inscreen dash because i had a lot of old PC equipment lying around.

try this website: http://www.mini-itx.com they sell a range of products for people wanting to run pc's in "strange place" like inside your car. If you look on the section for power supplies you'll see they have special dc-dc converters that are specially made for in car pc's.... There is even a power supply now on the market which has inputs that are wired up to your ignition switch, so when you turn on your engine, it boots up your pc. Then when you turn the ignition off it closes the computer down safely... It even safely closes down the system if it senses that the batteryis running low. Clever eh ?!?!

check out http://www.watt-power.co.uk !!!!! go for power supply above 100W, check http://www.pcmediastore.co.uk go 4 the ITPS controller (It's a 12Volt Low-dropout regulator and a shutdown controller) Shutdown controller:
Although you don't really need a shutdown controller if you use WinXP! Setup a generic UPS with a 'Negative Signal Polarity' in WinXP>Power Options, Then connect 5v from the PSU through a relay to pin 8 on the com port. Connect your 12v ACC line to activate the relay when your key is in the ingition. When you take your key out of the ignition, the ACC line drops to 0v which causes WinXP to close down. With the ITPS controller, once the ignition switches on, the ITPS waits a few seconds before the current gets idle (12volts), then starts the pc automatically!

also check out http://www.mediaengine.org its freeware and its a kick ass program u can even make your own skin for the engine,

Dang so how much $$, ER $L ?? is thi srunning you you? And as for voice recognition I once wrote a Hidden Markov Model thing in Java for a class - it was real powerful and would make a great core if you wanted to write your own software. But i think it would be really involved, the math was the easy part!

hasn't cost too much really. The screen (£200) and the PSU (£120) were the expensive parts. Had to cut up the dash board in my brandnew car and remould it to fit the screen in (nightmare).

Most of the other parts is just old computer stuff i have lying around.

Wow i want one of those in my car.

In answer to the orignal question, just get a Mac and you can talk to it to do what you like "open mail" "what time is it" "tell me a joke" etc, and then you can have it read the page/document to you.

Wouldn't want to hook it up to your car though, it'd probably read the brakes as an incompatible hardware type, and shut them down for "safety reasons". :)
