Fastest video streaming format from linux?

Hi,
I want to broadcastr video over a LAN. I'm working on Linux SuSE 9.1 with only 1GHz CPU and 512MB SDRAM. The networks runs at 100mbit/sec.
In windows I used windows media encoder no problem to broadcast my signal from my tv card so it could be watched on any pc in the household. Video would run absolutely fine at completely un-encoded size with full 1411kbps sound. (It used around 30mbits bandwidth). The only problem was that my CPU couldn't handle the load if I wanted to watch TV while the encoder was running. I never tried any other formats in windows.
Now I'm on linux I'm considering trying Real format and Quicktime formats (so long as windows users can view it I don't mind).
What is the fastest format and also, will my CPU handle the load better under linux so I can watch tv whilst encoding (video shouldn't be at all jumpy).. Video should run at min ~23fps and size 320x240 pixels or higher.
Thanks in advnce
