I'm looking for some advice on optimizing my Client's websites in all the big search engines such as Google, altavista and lycos.
I know that Google works on a hit count basis and by spidering to see how many sites link to the individual pages and viceversa. Does anybody have any good advice on creating meta description tags for optimum results and / or know any good apps for submitting to multiple search engines, tip & tricks to increase ratings in google etc (without being a cheat like some of these search/catalog pages that come out in google searches all the time).
For example, I just finished an acupuncture website for a client. Would it make a big difference if I use the same meta descriptions on all the pages, or should I make them as specific as I can to that specific page?
I mainly need some good advice on how Google works and how to get a site to the top. So if somebody searched for "Auricular Acupuncture" or "Electro-Auricular Acupuncture" I'd like to see this site just completed appear on the first page of results.
I believe if you have META descriptions on your page and no relevant content GOOGLE will not like that. Try to keep the meta descriptions to fit your content as much as possible and your rating will be higher. Also google does not like repeated descriptions, so do not say:
Acu, Acupuncture, Acupuncturing
To be honest, I read all this stuff like last year, so don't base your work on what I just said
I have always just used the site submit in CPanel but you have to submit each individual page separately with different descriptions and it's pretty tedious.
I'll have to see if I can find a book on search engine optimization. It's obvious something that's quite important to understand if you wanna have a really successful site (I guess ).
Nice one... this looks very comprehensive. I just started reading a "Search Engine Optimization for Dummies" book but I'm not a fan of the Dummies range of books.
Even though meta keywords aren't too important in the big search enignes except inktomi these days they take more thinking about and planning than I imagined. I must sound like such a noob here but I find this quite clever...

Let's take a look now at how the two measure up..
First Gary
<meta name="Keywords" content="gary's discount deep sea saltwater fishing reels" />
Now The Big Guys
<meta name="Keywords" content="fishing, discount, reels, saltwater, discount" />
.....
..........
But Gary Wins More Than Once
In addition to providing a complete description, and with just a little planning, Gary also picked up the phrases:
Who would thought such a small handful of keywords could have so much thought put into it? This is all very good... I'm waiting for the Google tips more than anything though.
BTW... I'd highly recommend this website, the guy who wrote it know's his stuff
Search engine optimization is important however it's just as important to find other streams of traffic. Search engines can be temperamental. You can go from first place to nowhere over night. That can be rather devastating to a business that depends on search engines for their traffic and especially their income.
Search engines should be just part of your overall traffic plan. Search engine traffic can take some time to develop - several months. Using PPC (pay per click) advertising can help a new site get traffic flowing quickly. Email still beats search engines when it comes to the number of impressions. Email done right can be a very valuable asset. Don't discount traditional advertising either especially if the site fronts for an actual brick and mortor store. Make sure every piece of advertising has at least the www domain name.
