Domain Registrars

XML, Perl, Python, and other languages can be discussed here, even if it isn't PHP (We might forgive you).

Domain Registrars

Post by patrikG »

So far I've been with Registerfly.com - but they have been screwing up lately. The support nowadays is virtually non-existant, domain-handling is buggy, same goes for their eCommerce-side of things... in short: I'm looking for recommendations for a new domain registrar if possible in the UK.

Who have you had good experiences with and for how long have you been using them?

Since registerfly is out of NJ (USA), I'll assume its okay to offer alternatives that aren't in the UK either.

I've used dotster.com for several years now, and there are some great things about it, and some not-so-great things.

They have a fantastic turnaround time on service requests, and on domain transfers. The longest any domain transfer has taken me in the last few years is 3 days - and most of that was reliant on the other registrar.

Their TOS and contracts make clear that you are an OWNER of a domain name, not a renter that gets use of it from them, where they own it. Network Solutions has the latter approach, and its something you should be very aware of when shopping for a registrar.

Their price is competitive, although not rock-bottom low.

They have a very nice "Synchronize domain renewal" system that lets you extend renewals by portions of a year, so that you can have multiple domains renew on the same date (extremely useful for businesses that want a recurring date for all renewals).

They don't have a CEO/Owner that uses his business to back his political views (like GoDaddy has). (I understand from others that GoDaddy gives good service, and has a solid interface, but personally, I deeply disagree with many of the statements the owner makes, and it does influence my willingness to help his business).

They are generally fairly straightforward in billing, and in documentation of changes.

The downsides I've found include a fairly unreasonable default for expired domains that turns them into SEO pages. One of my pages expired, I didn't notice in time, and it went SEO. When I notified the SEO with a trademark warning, the reply came from Dotster - Dotster itself was the SEO in question. I have serious ethical problems with them doing that.

Their interface hasn't changed much in the last couple of years, and the changes they have made have forced you to login more often, and have added more clutter, while not fixing the current annoyances in the interface. For a casual domain register customer, its probably not an issue, but with 15+ domains, its on my nerves.

I've considered moving to another registrar, but the good points far outweigh the bad points for me so far.

Well, I wanted to make clear that I've had mixed experiences with them, but on the whole, I'm fairly happy with them and do recommend them.

It actually came about after a chat/IM session I had where I got completely fed up with a non-devnet user using it literally every time. I've added it to my profile on a couple forums now, including the one he was on. If the shoe fits for a/some members here too - all the better to communicate it broadly. Its really difficult on non-english speakers.

Two favorites:

Buydomains.com - 4 years
Godaddy.com - 2 years

I find their control panels easy although usually I just need is to setup the NS records. Easy of use is important to me ... probably because I used so many really bad control panels. Buydomains.com has execellent service, toll free 800 in US at least. I've used a lot of others but these are the two that stand out for me.
