DNS question

Post by Ree »

Say, I have a registered domain which is present in the dns servers of my hosting provider. If I decide to transfer the domain to another provider, the previous provider should delete any dns records related to that domain from its servers, right? What if it does not?

correct they should.

If they don't then only the computers that use those dns server(s) for their dns will be issued the incorrect information. regardless, they should remove the entries from their server(s).

ok let's say that your ISP is called "XYZnet". You use them for both an ISP and hosting and that is where your site is located and your dns is with them.

they might have dns servers: ns1.xyznet.com and ns2.xyznet.com.

if you use them for your isp then your dns servers would be (on your local machine) ns1.xyznet.com and ns2.xyznet.com...if they didnt' delete the records, then you're going to be given ip information for whatever they have for your domain.

now let's say you change ISP's and you're not using "XYZnet" but have switched to "bobnet" and your dns servers are now ns1.bobnet.com and ns2.bobnet.com. When you try to hit your domain (assuming you changed the location of your dns servers with your registrar), bobnet will look to the new dns servers for the ip information....but people who are still using XYZnet for their isp will still get the old ip info (until they delete the records).

The thing is that ISPs is not related to my question, only hosting providers and the registrar. Here's an example: some dude has a domain dudedomain.com registered with DudeRegistrar and his domain records are present in his hosting provider's DudeHosting servers. Now the dude finds a better host HostingForDudes and wants to transfer the domain to the new host. HostingForDudes tells him their name servers and the dude forwards the same to DudeRegistrar to transfer the domain to the new host. Now at this point, the registrar asks the dude to ask DudeHosting to remove any dns records related to his domain from their servers.

Now what I wanted to know, what would happen if DudeHosting would not remove those records? I guess even if the records are not removed, the domain would still point to the new host, no?

as long as no one is using their dns servers for their dns then you should be fine...they should still delete it though

If it really depends on if the domain is locked! Domain high jacking has become a common thing so some registrar who also provide domain parking DNS give the domain owner the option to lock their domain so it can not be transferred to another registrar! Some registrars do it without your knowledge in order to keep you paying them for the register. ARIN is the only place you can turn when this happens! Even they sometimes have no power to order the registrar to release the domain for transfer by the domain owner!

1&1 is famous for this, they will continue to register the domain every year. If you send them letters or contacting ARIN does nothing. Only through suing them will they finally give you back your domain! I had a server with them 3 years ago, I had 7 domains so I moved 5 of them then closed my account. I thought I had moved all 7 but was told by my new DNS provider that 2 of the domains were locked and could not be moved. After contacting 1&1 they came up with big service charge to remove the locks. I refused to pay it. It took me nearly 3 years to get only 1 of the domains released, the other is still registered to me but I can not access it or move it to my current DNS provider! The funny part is when you do a whois it has my name and company info and it says the domain expires in 2012! I never paid for all those years, it just a way for them to maintain the register which blocks any hope for me to every get this domain back.
