95 watts enough?

Post by Cheeseboy »

Hi, i am going to run a opteron 1.6ghz cpu 512 ram (3) 200 gig hard drives and one fan and a 128 graphics card. Do you think 95 watts is enough to run all of that?
Thx

I didn't even know they still made 95 watt power supplies anymore. I'd be reluctant to run a power supply less than 400...

The opteron alone uses 95 watts. Each HD is gonna use another 5-15, the graphics card will use anywhere from 5-30, the motherboard uses 20-30, and we're ignoring floppy, cdrom, network cards, sound cards...

JUST what you listed should have at least 135*1.3 = 175 watts MINIMUM. If you add any of the other things I listed, you'll need yet more.

I'd shoot for a minimum of 200 or better yet, 250. Just to be on the safe side.

You can pick up cheap 350w PSU's for peanuts.

http://www.ebuyer.com is a nice start if you're in the UK.
