FTP and my firewall = blocked

I can connect to several FTP servers via my Mac. I have Mac OS's firewall turned on, of course with the exception of port 21.

When I try to connect to a certain FTP server, I cannot connect. But I can if I disable the entire firewall.

I made an exception for port 20 and 1023 (that was a stab in the dark), but still no luck. PASV/no PASV has no effect.

The tech support at the shared host of the problematic FTP server can't/won't/don't know how to help.

Can you suggest any other ports to open in the firewall?

You have to open the ports which your FTP server will communicate back to the FTP client to use for the transfer. These are typically very high ports, things like 40000-44999
