Threading in GNU Mailman mail lists?

Call me dumb, but I just don't get mailing lists. To me, they're a kind of wanna-be forum, and I would prefer using a forum interface with email notification over having copious amounts of emails from threads that I don't have interest in.
However, I don't think that's going to change any time soon, so for now, I'd like to know how to correctly specify subject headers. It seems that I continually break the thread whenever I reply. For example:
[Wikitech-l] Subject
is the original message, so I've tried:
[Wikitech-l] Subject (same subject)
Re: [Wikitech-l] Subject (default mail-client behavior)
But alas, both of these break threading in the archives. I don't have a mailman installation lying around to test on, so it's difficult to try out other options. But nevermind that:
What's the proper way to specify the subject header on a mailing list?
