SEO and the Flash webpages

XML, Perl, Python, and other languages can be discussed here, even if it isn't PHP (We might forgive you).

SEO and the Flash webpages

Post by Sindarin »

I couldn't find a proper forum so here goes:

My client has some websites done by a previous web designer which wants to update.
The one problem that has risen is that none (and I mean NONE) of his websites are listed
anywhere in Google or other search engine. This was that the sites had no meta-tags
and more importantly any text content, as they were all made in Flash. (ouch*)
I proposed that we could add a simple description to the index page, but the client didn't want his
awesome "enter the site" layout "messed up" with text.
Is there any way to make it list in search engines without breaking their terms and getting banned?

You could use the swfObject (which uses javascript) to add the flash to the page.
This technique allows you to add alternate content that would show up if the user doesn't have flash.
This content is completely searchable by engines.

Just google swfObject

I like to think of Flash as a dynamic image format (in the context of web content). If you'd be comfortable using images for paragraphs of text then by all means Flash is a contender.

Flash has many other uses, many of which it's extremely well suited for. Web content just isn't one of them.
