animation / cartooning

Post by Luke »

A friend and I have come up with an idea for a cartoon. I've always wanted to get into short animations, and I do have some decent artistic skills (I used to be a pretty decent artist when I was in school - pencil-drawn cartoons especially). I'm just wondering... for somebody who has never done any computer animation / cartooning, what program would be the best to start with? The only thing I can think of is flash. Also, are there any books you would recommend for an amateur animator?

Not Flash ... just plain old video editing software. If you like open source then Cinelerra is awesome. There are some lighter open source ones like KINO. And of course the usual Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut, etc.

Hand draw and scan, or get a tablet and use Photoshop or The GIMP.
