phpmyadmin keeps booting me out :(

I set up phpmyadmin on my server with apt-get install phpmyadmin. It all seems to work fine. I set up a virtual host for it at http://pma.example.com, then I went to that url in my browser, and phpmyadmin's login came up. I tried logging in with root (no password) and it worked. So I click priveleges with the intention of adding a password to the root user and adding a few users, but before the page even loads, I'm booted back to the login screen. Now I enter root again and it says I do not have access. So I try again. This time there is no error message, it just shows me the login screen again. So I try again. This time it logs me back in, but as soon as I click anything, back to the login screen I go.
So... I created a new user with the command line. I go to the phpmyadmin login screen, and log in with my new user. It works just fine... until I click on something again. As soon as I click on anything, I am back to the login screen where sometimes I can log in... sometimes I can't... sometimes I get an error message... sometimes I don't. What in the world could be happening here?? It's hard to diagnose a problem when it keeps changing
