This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of
its recipients. The following addresses failed:

<info@redsquareclothing.co.uk>

SMTP error from remote server after transfer of mail text:
host mx00.1and1.co.uk[212.227.15.169]:
500 line limit exceeded
We've just started receiving these emails and im not sure what the problem is, it happens when invoices get set from the site (order confirmation), a quick google search produced nothing of any use, can anyone tell me what this means? its only started happening the last few days

Cheers, Mal

It looks as though the SMTP server is restricting either:

a) Message lengths to 500 lines *
b) The entire SMTP transcript to 500 lines

How long are the messages you're sending? By the way, the fact this is saying "remote server" indicates that it's at the point where it tries to relay the message that the problem arises; not whilst Swift is connected.

* 500 lines is NOT just text... attachments will consitute as "lines of text" where SMTP is concerned too

EDIT | Doh! Thought you'd posted in the Swift Mailer forum sorry. Apologies if you're not using Swift, ignore my references to it ;)

haha, your right im not using swift, if you remember i did have words with you about switching over to it but there's a few problems with authentication with my mail server that i couldnt get working right away so ive put it on the backburner for a while.

In fact, im moving over to a dedicated server so i may try and integrate it in the next few weeks...

Anyway back to the problem, its a really weird problem, it only happens every once in a while and for seemingly no reason, ive received much much bigger emails than what im sending here, its a pretty standard order confirmation email and like i said, its only started happening the last few days.

Maybe the new server will not suffer like this, time will tell.....

Cheers anyway though mate!

Hi Mal. Same thing in here. We work with 1and1 servers and around the same date you point, the same error line appears. It's also random, sometimes it works, other it wont.. Nothing has changed and still we can't get any answer from 1and1 support team. Did you finally get a solution for the issue? If so please post any update, the help will be much appreciate

Rgds,
Javier Canas

I ran into the same problem and this was the only place I found that told me I wasn't insane ... the problem was with 1and1.com. So when I got a reply from 1and1 support, I figured I'd pass it along.

The answer is basically that you can't do anything about it. In short, you buy cheap, you get cheap. You go with 1and1 for your hosting, they won't allow you to get long emails, it sounds like. Honestly, folks at 1and1, if you can't handle the bandwidth from a little longer email coming in, get out of the business! Here's the answer I got from them:

"As the error message says, the line limit was exceeded. The line length must be less then 10240 characters. Kindly check the email."

Says a lot, doesn't it? But if I'm reading it write, the "line" is likely the body length of the email.

Now, after the nasty things I said about 1and1, I must admit I had good response from my support query. They didn't have to answer me, since I'm not a customer; I'm the sender of the email (though I pulled the "I'm trying to supply excellent service to your customers just like you are" card).

Looks like you have to limit the length of your if you want to send to someone using 1and1 for their hosting.
