Don't panic!

They recently added this feature. If you look at the google search string, it only runs the search on php.net. It can also narrow the search down to the functions, documentation, etc. Lots of colleges, forums and some corporate sites use this because then they don't have to worry about indexing the site themselves.

I know what you mean. The old one worked just fine in my eyes and the new one still gives me a bit of a shock when I use it.

If they wanted some new search functionality or better indexing they could've just posted something and gotten a few hundred unemployed developers to volunteer to put it in their portfolio.

Oh, well...

I found that the old one was crap. It never found what I was after.
Googling is a much better solution.

I don't know, I hardly used the search function. When I did I only used it as a shortcut to get to a certain section of the documentation. On those rare occasions (all two of them) when I actually needed to search for something it did rather resemble Apple's searching capabilities (or lack thereof). They didn't really give any warning (that I knew of) that suddenly part of their site functionality went to a very different design and that usually throws users off.
