entering the web design world: a few questions

Post by snpo123 »

In the [near] future, I plan to put together a portfolio with another web designer and offer to make web pages or scripts to anyone who requests our services. I guess it would work kind of like a web design company, only no where near as official or definite (It wouldn't be full-time, just something to do along with everything else in my daily life). But before we can put up this portfolio and start doing projects for other people/companys, there are a few questions I need to ask. Anyone who has experience in this type of field or has their own company should know these answers:

What are the usual types of projects people ask you to do? Are they just one script on one page or an entire web site?

How should you typically charge, by the hour or by the size of the project, and how do you determine how much to charge?

How many people on average visit your portfolio, and how many actually ask for work? And of those people, how many do you actually complete the project for and accept payment?

How do you get the word out about your services and advertise your portfolio?

I ask these qustions in hopes that I will not be taken advantage of, and so that I will be properly educated when it comes to this type of buisness. If anybody can help me out, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Obviously putting your website in your signature on all of the forums that you frequently visit will help you greatly. I've gotten a lot of jobs just by visiting these forums. Don't go overboard and start new threads welcoming people to your new business. Getting a few clients will help spread the word of your services (which means more cash ;)).

Could you show a few examples here? And, what do you do? Layouts, templates, what?

I'd say i get about the same of each

This is a tricky subject, it can depend on your skill level (better you are, the higher you can charge) projected completion time, type of coding etc, i also take into account if it is for a profit site and therefore usually charge a little extra

I'm planning on doing templates, scripts, whole web pags, ect for anybody who needs it. Currently I don't have any work or examples to show, which is why I say my portfolio will be up in the future. It'll get put up after I have something to show as an example. :)

Anyway, thanks for your help guys, I think I have a better idea of what to expect as a web designer.
