entering the web design world: a few questions

In the [near] future, I plan to put together a portfolio with another web designer and offer to make web pages or scripts to anyone who requests our services. I guess it would work kind of like a web design company, only no where near as official or definite (It wouldn't be full-time, just something to do along with everything else in my daily life). But before we can put up this portfolio and start doing projects for other people/companys, there are a few questions I need to ask. Anyone who has experience in this type of field or has their own company should know these answers:
What are the usual types of projects people ask you to do? Are they just one script on one page or an entire web site?
How should you typically charge, by the hour or by the size of the project, and how do you determine how much to charge?
How many people on average visit your portfolio, and how many actually ask for work? And of those people, how many do you actually complete the project for and accept payment?
How do you get the word out about your services and advertise your portfolio?
I ask these qustions in hopes that I will not be taken advantage of, and so that I will be properly educated when it comes to this type of buisness. If anybody can help me out, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.
