[For hire] Looking for full-time work ~ Melbourne Australia

In November I will be settling in Melbourne after a short spell of traveling. I'm a full-time PHP/MySQL/Apache/Linux developer (read, geek) from the UK, with a Working Holiday Maker visa permitting me to work in Australia.

You can view my resume at http://chriscorbyn.co.uk/

What I do now

In my day job I'm swamped with complex SQL queries manipulating school behaviour, attendance and assessment data for statistical analysis in a centralised web based application accessed by secondary schools right across the UK. I am involved with all aspects of the project, from frontend design, complete backend module implementation and feasibility studies through to database optimization and server maintenance. Ease of use must be the focus of my attention in everything I do.

The project website can be found at http://www.iris.ac/

Skills beyond my day job

Outside of work maintain a popular open source project, part-hosted on SourceForge. Swift Mailer is an established, fully object-oriented, test driven library for sending emails from PHP applications. The work involves a lot of time spent reading RFCs and refactoring code and profiling code in order to aid with optimization.

The project website can be found at http://www.swiftmailer.org/

I have been developing with PHP for over 3 years now and I just get more and more passionate about it the more I work with it. All code I write is object-oriented, following commonly used design patterns and is unit tested where appropriate.

My skills are not limited to PHP however. I also have over 3 years JavaScript experience and 6 years HTML/CSS experience.

I have been developing small personal projects with Java/Swing outside of work for the past 8 months too. I am able to transfer my knowledge of design patterns into Java very easily.

I'm a bit of a UNIX (read, OS X) / Linux fanatic. My full-time work involves maintaining a cluster of linux servers running replicating MySQL nodes, MX servers, DNS and of course Apache/PHP. I also run my own VDS server running similar services (less the MySQL replication).

I run projects from Subversion repositories (including my day job) and have experience of maintaining these repositories over WebDAV and SSH.

What I'm looking for

I'm basically looking for work that involves programming in either PHP or Java, possibly with the opportunity to be involved with project server management too. I will be living in Melbourne around friends from mid-November onwards.

I have a flight out of the UK on 29th September 2007 (Destined for Melbourne), will then travel up the east coast of Australia and finally come back down to Melbourne in November to work. I'm really just hoping somebody will be able to offer me a position which is why I'm asking now, rather than in 5 months time.

You can email me at: chris@w3style.co.uk or you can PM me via the forum.

Thanks very much :)
