I wouldn't do something like this for under $5,000.

Yeah, right.
In many cases this is unethical, illegal, and proves nothing. Why not ask for references like the rest of the world does? :D

We usually enforce the "if you have nothing positive to contribute, don't" mentality, but with comments such as "Guarantee for LIFETIME...", "don’t want to re-invent the wheel, in this case I want to clone http://WWW.AUTOTRADER.COM. OFF THE SHELF APPLICATIONS ARE NOT WELCOME!"

... I simply cannot take this seriously. My advice would be to outline the exact feature list you want and create a thorough design document and what is expected. You are assuming a) we are either former employees of autotrader (not likely) b) have intimate knowledge of it's sites content. Also very unlikely.

Typical. I have seen lots of posts where the project creater has all sorts of strict rules, insane demands, wants only the best of the best, but yet doesn't want to pay for it or wants it done in a week. Considering that most of us get paid professional salaries, I would expect to be treated like a professional. I'm sure someone else can patch something together for you though. Good Luck!

Trust me, that estimate is out by a factor of at least 10. Autotrader is insanely complicated. I know someone who's a DBA there.

Laughed so hard on this one that my ribs hurt. I'm surprised the guy didn't just ask developers for $1000 honest money up front for getting the work, or have developers waive all rights to getting paid, or request that developers mail in their workstations so that it can be inspected to see if they are a serious developer or not. I mean, really.

Gotta agree with onion. Even just getting the vehicle data setup (before handling any ads, posting, etc) will be tough and time consuming. This thread is a joke.
