Full-Time, In-House Web Developer Position Open On The Beach

We’re seeking a Website Developer/Programmer who’s seeking a challenge. This forward-thinking position involves:

• Developing specific scripts/applications to improve business processes and website user experience

• Assisting in monitoring hosting environment

• Creating code changes to both backend and front of web platform

• Building and developing content management solutions

• Designing and developing new web-based applications and modules

• Understanding how to design and develop Web 2.0 applications and functions

• Designing a site from start to finish (graphic designs will be provided)

Qualified applicants will possess the following skill sets:

• ASP, PHP, Perl, JavaScript Java, Ruby on Rails, Ajax, XML, HTML, XTHML, CSS, SQL

• Demonstrated understanding of standards-based coding, browser compatibility issues, and web design constraints

• Strong knowledge of the Web and its technologies, tools, vendors, and products.

• Ability to learn quickly, stays at the forefront of emerging technologies and shares knowledge with team members

• Creative problem-solving ability in a small business environment

• Comfortable juggling multiple tasks and projects while adhering to firm deadlines and maintaining focus on urgent priorities

• Proficient with Flash, ActionScript, and Photoshop a plus

• Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization best practices a plus

You want someone who knows ALL or just SOME of these languages?

ASP, PHP, Perl, Java, Ruby on Rails, ActionScript

I mean, most devs I know like to stick in a camp and not be generalists in all these various languages, or they have done one of these languages but gladly moved to another. I mean, if I knew all those languages, I'd probably would be terrible in at least a couple of them. For instance, I've done the Perl, ASP, C#, and Java thing, but gladly moved to PHP. (However, obviously all web developers do know Javascript, AJAX, XML, HTML, XHTML, CSS, and SQL or they can't survive in this industry.)

You say you want only inhouse guys, and I can understand the need because it's inevitable, but you might have a hard time with turnover and salary needs, especially if requiring the devs to only be inhouse and not on telecommute VPN with occasional, regularly scheduled 4 days on site time. The problem is because all the trade journals that the devs read have monthly stories of freelancers doing well for themselves and guys doing startups and making a good bit of cash. Some may also consider VPN an expensive option, but there is what's called a "Poor Man's VPN". So consider for example hiring an inhouse dev that gets trained with your team for about 2 months in the office, and then is given finally the option to VPN from home on Poor Man's VPN with a required 4 days on site every other week. Also, consider using freelancers as well.

By offering some flexibility, you can boost creativity, curb the entrepreneurial bug somewhat, and pay someone a moderate salary rather than a truly competitive salary. Also, let's say you only have room for 10 cubicles. That's not a problem -- you can have 15-20 developers in a system where you use VPN or a Poor Man's VPN with a required 4 day stint in the office every other week.

Also, think about your area. I live near Myrtle Beach, and I can work from anywhere in the world with my laptop. I can rent a house at the beach for a week and work, or I can just park in the public area and plop down a chair. Free wireless is all over, and often it's not necessary as a dev except for about 3-4 times a day, and I can do that at Starbucks or McDonald's down the road. (I mean, I can work locally with a web server on my laptop, connecting occasionally to wireless as necessary.) So the world is my oyster, as they say, and I can work in a peaceful, relaxing environment and perhaps catch an occasional run, game of volleyball, or stroll through the water. So it's fairly enticing for freelancers at the beach, rather than to work inhouse.
