Re: PHP/SQL/AJAX Developer Needed FT onsite in Manhattan
I hear that living in NYC in something reasonable runs by "landlord lottery". So, most people commute in from Jersey or some other nearby state. What's the average commute time if someone were to do that? Are we looking at two hours in and two hours out? Plus, even if you're not driving, fuel prices are eating people like this completely alive as the costs are passed down to them in one shape or form. Therefore, you're looking at an extremely dedicated person.
With the advent of high speed Internet, the VPN (even poor man's VPN can be setup very affordably), videoconferencing you can hook up with a TV in your house and sit in front of it with a wireless laptop -- why do companies like this want onsite people anymore? Why not keep everyone offsite in a telecommute, save the floorspace costs and other associated costs, and have people show up every other week for 3 days on site in a couple conference rooms?
And another thing, if I'm going to have to be this dedicated to work for a company doing PHP work, why don't I just catch a job in Europe where it's more fun and with a shorter commute (as well as more occasional telecommute options), or work as an independent freelancer, or simply take a fly-around consulting job where most of the time you're working in telecommute or on the bench, anyway?
In my opinion, PHP onsite jobs are dinosaurs. Those who want to hire for them must work extra hard to lure away PHP guys who can have all kinds of wonderful opportunities available to them. Don't hold your breath.
