I'm applying for a job. How much should I ask for?

Post by funphp »

I am applying for a job in Las Vegas. This job requires PHP and MySql knowledge, which I have. They asks me for my salary requirements (this is a must). I don't know how much should I tell them.

I don't have a degree is computer programming. I learned PHP and MySql myself for 2-3 years. I have written some scripts to add features to an existing web site. I can build some simple dynamic web sites. I believe I am somewhere at entry and intermediate level.

I also know JavaScript, CSS, C# .NET, Sql Server, MS Access. All self-taught.

I never worked for any company as a programmer.

How much would you ask if you were me? Please note that "I'm open to any offer" is not an option. The employer must know. Thanks.

This isn't PHP Code.

I'm moving this to Job Hunt. Let me know if you think it should be moved elsewhere.
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

You're a developer. Approach the problem like you'd approach a new coding task. Research. Find out what are PHP developers at your level, working in LV, are paid. Look at some job adverts and take an average of what's on offer. Reduce it a bit if you really want the job. Increase it a bit if you think the employer has lots of spare cash. Find out what sort of money you'll need for rent, travel, food, going out, etc. What's the minimum you could realistically live on? What do you feel you're worth (if you're honest with yourself)?

Hell, phone up some LV recruitment agents and ask them what they think you could get (without letting on that you're not really looking), then ask for that.
