Portfolio Website

Post by mintedjo »

Hi there!
I'm going to build a website purely to demonstrate my leet skillz!!
I want to make it impressive but professional and not go over the top with unnecessary junk going on, so I want some feedback from people who know a bit about web design :-)

I'm wondering what you people think makes a good website!
and
I also want to know what you think other people think makes a good website if that differs from your answer to the first one :-)

If you were looking to recruit somebody would you go for the virtuos developer who does lots of technically challenging and impressive stuff or would you go for somebody who is focused on standards compliance and accessibility but doesnt really do anything amazingly fatastic?

I want both (as one body), actually. :)

You would have to describe yourself and exactly what your trying to accomplish with this portfolio website.

I am not a designer at all, so it's very dificult to demonstrate my portfolio to clients because all they generally want to see are "pretty websites". I think this is the case for a lot of programmers, so having a solid resume is much more critical.

I suppose most people would, I was hoping for some kind of prioritisation (is that a word?) of the two.

Depends on what I'm looking for and what you are good at.

If I want a good designer I'd look for a portfolio site that has a good site design but also references and examples of what that person is capable of. Proffesional examples but maybe also more artistic features. So not too many but various examples.

For a programmer I agree with John. But you can have some clean features on your site without making it too much over the top.

I would hire a designer who studied Information Architecture.

Bingo for me.

This industry needs standards and perhaps more importantly adoption of standards. If you can't fool a computer into thinking your work is perfect (100% W3C validation, etc) how do you plan on convincing a much smarter human your work is of the greatest quality???

I have worked on way to many projects where the developers claimed everything was fast, secure, well done, commented, etc...relative to who? Apparently our personal standards were wildly different cause IMHO those proggies needed some serious TLC. :P
