Hi All...
I've just been given the dubious honour of project managing our firms creation of an eCommerce module. We currently manufacture ERP software (accounting/inventory) and have just migrated our app from an old 4GL to the latest from Progress.
I want to make my task easier by picking an "off the shelf" eCommerce pacakge (one that is well structured and well written) and then customising all the database calls to suit our database structure, or indeed placing a procedural call back into the ERP package. (for example: get me the price of the product where Product=A, Customer=B, Qty=14, Date=12-12-03 - quite a lot of code, complex pricing algorithm, hierachy, database driven rules and the like and no way I want to duplicate it in any sense).
I probably won't be doing the work personally but will get some programming staff skilled up in the necessary departments.
The existing packages (like X-Cart) look like they'd handle 60% of the front end and extending them shouldn't be a problem (avoiding of course dogs like osCommerce and the like)
Questions:
1. has anyone here attempted this in the past?
2. anyone familiar with Progress?
3. does anyone foresee major problems uncoupling one of these packages from their mySql database?
OK, thanks for your input.
Ric
