having talked to one of the VPs at Zend recently, there are some big things that are going to happen so to make PHP more supported. As the language matures and gains more and more acceptance, certain things have to happen to make potentail users happy, in many cases there are gov't and large corp users that have certain requirements to deal with potential liability issues. The Zend guys are on top of it and things look very promising for the future of PHP.
The concerns about the money that Zend charges for products like Studio I can't understand. Sure its a decent chunk of change, but so is Dreamweaver, and don't even get me started on MS and the price of their visual studio. Every company that offers a nice IDE charges for it, look at Borland, MS Zend and a host of others. You don't like it, so what? There are many (open source) editors available that are nice to use. EditPad, Context, and a host of others for both windows and linux.
Open source products, like PHP are low-cost, not neccessarily no-cost. Compare that to offerings from MS, IBM and a host of others that charge dearly for some of their products. While I don't have too many qualms about ripping MS off by cracking ther <span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span>, there are others, like SQLYog, which are great tools and low cost. The developers of those deserve our support and contributions so they can make a better product.
anyway thats my 2 cents

yes, they are evil
found this page during a search for zend encoder (alternatives)
sry for digging this old post up - but i really felt like i had to say it...
the reason why zend _is_ evil is not just because their price tags are extremly high - it's because they missuse the trust the open source community gave them
and i'm not talking about the zde either - cause that's something every other company (which doesn't have the unfair advantage of developing the "php-vm") can provide too without any big effort - i'm talking about software that runs on the server enhancing php's abilities (which php is only lacking due to zend anyways...)
and you cant compare it to microsoft either, microsoft has developed their product from scratch themselves (or at least bought it from the competitors... - the point is it's _their_ product, so they may charge whatever they feel like)
you can't say this for zend, php is not zend - the zend guys were nice enough to provide us with a vm (thanks for that but an engine though a major part still isn't everything and can be replaced!), which gives them a certain power of telling which direction php will have to go in future - now this is the part where it get's ugly:
since zend's interests as a capitalistic company are to act in a way to ensure maximum profits and not in a way that would be best for php, php is suffering from zend - and zend of course offers this additional stuff php is lacking (due to zend!) in exchange for inaceptably high fees
and that's why they're evil, more evil than anything else imaginable - and that's why zend should be penalized by any means, removing their engine, and anything else in php that's provided by zend, there are alternatives any ways, free open-source alternatives!
if zend intends to make money selling products that influence the way php is treated by the server, than that's fine but they have to quit their position as "the php company" since there is - obviously - a conflict of interests
