mine'll be lucky if it ever sees the bios screen xD.
i hardly EVER turn mine off... and all you crazy f00ls talking about electricty... ill tell you this, our computer uses less energy than your TV does on standby... and i bet all u crazy f00ls leave ur tv on standby! and for the energy it takes to start a fluresent lightbulb, you could run your computer for 2 hours. heres a tip... leave the sides off your case and have a temp. controled fan, uses lot less energy than with case on and norm fan.
also, turn your monitor off if your not using ur pc, cause that'll be whats running ur bill high.

I turn my main personal machine on when I use it and turn it off as soon as I am done. My office machine is one from when I get to the office to when I leave the office. My Linux box is on until it starts making weird sounds that keep me up at night. My Wifes is on all the time until the wireless network utility chokes and has to be rebooted (or until the kids start pressing unknown buttons and the computer threatens to blow up the house if we don't reboot and send the kids to their rooms). The two Linux machines that I am going to be building for the kiddies are probably going to be on from morning to bedtime.
I have 2 PCs, 1 running for 2 years and the other for 8 months already. I only shut them off when
1) Installing new hardware
2) Troubleshooting hardware problems.
3) Vacuuming all the dust inside the computer case.
4) Scheduled power outage.
And yea, it's true that a computer does not consume a lot of electricity.

Do storms really matter? I thought I was super 31337 with my power surge protecter thingfeyd wrote:I only shut down for reboots, the occasional thunderstorm and occasional tornado. Other than that, it's pretty much always on running something or another.
Set Search Time - A google chrome extension. When you search only results from the past year (or set time period) are displayed. Helps tremendously when using new technologies to avoid outdated results.

Interesting to hear the opinions (facts?) about the electricity. I don't know how much power my pc uses. I assumed the pc/monitor uses quite some power, because my electricity bill has exactly doubled since using my pc so much. Everything else stayed the same (water, gas, no new electrical apps). But those figures will be easy to check I guess.

Don't ask me how many terabytes during the last couple of months.
Any decent nntp user-agent can shutdown your computerwhen her download-queue is empty

Nah, I have it setup to rescan the newsgroups I monitor every 300 seconds for new content. I think I spend half of my time in newsgroups anymore. I figure it costs me about $20 a month max to keep the computer running 24/7 and I can afford that.timvw wrote:AKA Panama Jack wrote:News groups.Maugrim_The_Reaper wrote:I always turn it off. Why?
