ok, we'll give this a few more days (Until Sunday) to come up with a complete list of awards then open this up to nominations of candidates.

so far we have:

last years complete list
best avatar
most thorough response
most likely to reduce strife

did I miss any additions?

This is a good list. I think it covers the key points of what this community offers while still keeping it light and flexible.

Wittiest Member Award! ;)

Seriously, I'm drawing a blank... I think what's suggested so far, combined with last years cover most things more than one person has a chance of winning...

One thing we don't have an award for is for graphical/design prowess. That's kind of odd I think since almost everything we do involves an interface of some sort. How about a "Best Graphics/Design" award?
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

how would we measure that though? This isn't a 'contest' per se in that people can submit entries. Everyone just votes on users based on their experience with them here. I guess perhaps people may have clicked some links to see external sites and therefore would have some exposure to their graphics design ability, but my guess is that will be few and far between.

I just don't see how that could be determined...

Very few people choose to share their designs here, and its very informal when they do. If we do indeed want to recognize design talents, we should have a contest for best design - entirely seperate from the annual devnet awards.

Otherwise its going to be very lopsided.

I disagree. I have seen lots of designs in the UI / Design forum and I have seen most peoples websites and I know whos designs I like and whos I don't. This is not 'lopsided' AND if people think that it is...why don't you and everyone else post your best designs and then people can make their own opionons if they already don't have an opinion on that person. That would make sence, yes? Good, SO BE IT!

/me slams down hammer and declares this to be apart of the awards.

Court dismissed!

I don't think subjectivity should deter us from making this category. Essentially all of our categories are determined subjectively.
As for not everyone sharing their design abilities - the same could be said about the Code Snippets section. Certainly not everyone has contributed to the Code Snippets forum.

All that being said though - I guess I kind of agree. Simply because I'm not sure how I would decide who to vote for for that category ;). It just seems like design is an important part of what many of us do - and it's kind of odd that such an important aspect goes unnoticed.

You haven't seen designs from half the mods, me, or many of the high count posters. Thats not "most peoples" by any stretch. (Do keep in mind that the only site many people share here is their pre-packaged blog, which they neither designed, nor modified).

Heck, lets even have a time period to do it in, and criteria for judging. Oh wait, thats a contest, which I already suggested. In fact, we can do it seperate from these awards entirely, since its a whole different issue.

As you said..

not trying to argue here but i think that if you wish to get the award, durring the time when we all can say 'who gets what award' you should also post why 'so and so should get such and such award' OR 'why i should get such award' if you think it is nessicary.

therefor i think that this would be a really good award as we shouldnt seperate the awards and be like 'ok lets have a best design award later on' but instead have 'look at my bomb desings iv been kickin dawg' and see what people say. i really like this idea for a award (no, i have absolutly no designs but plain text ones so i wont win obviously) but it would be a great part of the awards situation as it would give people the chance to say 'i deserve this award because of this' which is something that the rest of the awards do not allow usually.

i thought i layed the hammer down already! i hold you in contempt!

Stop bickering please. We aren't interested in hearing people dispute the ideas. The moderators will deliberate over the ideas thrown out.

The current categories in discussion already have a broad spectrum of categories and could possible provide a unique "winner" for each.

I believe they are good
