Kind of like a group award that anyone can be nominated into?

That's one way of looking at it. I was thinking of it as a sort of medal.

Sounds like a good enough idea, and an easy one to implement. Maybe along the same lines as a 'Best of' individual award we can award a community group award that encompasses the totality of members that other members think are deserving of being in that group?

Or am I using too many big words?

too many big words. If I were to make the decision, I'd just say pick 4-5 of the most helpful (or whatever) and give them all awards/badges that say "most helpful 2006"

wait a minute, shouldn't these be PHPDN awards 2006? When do we normally do these? I thought I got awards for 2005 last time. Am I going crazy?

... off to look at last year ...

They can't all be the 'most' anything, then there would not be a most.

As for the year, not we are hosting the awards this year, hence the 2007. Last year it was 2006 (points to signature) and the year before that it was 2005.

Can we have a 'best Grim... award?'
I never win anything :(

Unless there's a 'best at disappearing for long periods' award!

can we have a "sexiest velour uniform" category? ;-)

Seriously though, I like the "best avatar" thing as well. I'm also keen on the awarding medal/barnstar concept. "Mosts" should be limited to few categories, especially the fun ones.

phpbb medal mod (though we could do with better images, maybe famfamfam's silk icons?)

seconded! :P
Set Search Time - A google chrome extension. When you search only results from the past year (or set time period) are displayed. Helps tremendously when using new technologies to avoid outdated results.

You're right if the award reads "Most helpful person"... Luke's example was the title of an inclusive list.

edit: I guess I should contribute something useful. I like the "most helpful persons" badge/medal, maybe having all nominated users included. Also perhaps a "best sig award"; maybe "best supporting role in a 'write code for me/do my homework' post"

My opinion:
1. Most Helpful Award :D

3. Best at taking a thread off topic Award :( not a good thing
4. Most Unique Theorizer Award :( too hard to define
5. The Fastest Advancing Newcomer Award :D
6. The Most Peculiar Award :D because peculiarity should be celebrated
7. IATM Award (I Am The Manual) :( not particularly interesting
8. Most Friendly Award :D
9. Most Funny Award :D
10. Most Inspirational Award :( too hard to define
11. Best avatar :D
12. Most thorough response :D
13. Most likely to reduce strife :D
