PHP/Flash volunteer needed
Hello, Epiphany 6 Studios is in a bind. We have no money at the moment and we need a flash website adapted to a PHP site setup. We haev an e107 site currently running. PHP is vital to our site, however we have a fantastic new flash site in development. What we need at the moment is someone who can please help us in adapting PHP to our Flash site. Anyone who volunteers to help us will be given full credit for their efforts as well as possible future opportunities to work for the Epiphany 6 team on future projects. Thank you. Those interested please contact Jay Wollin at JayWolin@e6studios.com. Thank you again.
Would you like to do some design work for my business? I can't afford to pay you right now but I'll give you a credit and possibly have lots of paid work for you in the future.
Tempting, isn't it.
There are so many posts peddling the same line I'm beginning to wonder if there's a school for web con artists out there somewhere.
D minus - must try harder.

what smurf
you know what, I have always had such good luck finding decent human beings who were interested in working on projects in forums. Especially in ones titled HELP WANTED VOLUNTEERS WANTED dickhead. You guys are just <span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> because you don't work and no one hires you, or you just visit help wanted forums to flame people because you have no lives. Well, I was really surprised by the lack of sensibilities in here. A guy can ask for help. I can't afford to pay someone to switch the site over because I am busy trying to pay my coders who are busy writing source code for game engines. Learn how to do that and maybe I will pay you. Have fun rubbing it off in front of your Celerons guys.

If people would simply ask for help - in a help wanted / volunteers wanted - section, it would be fine.Navarone wrote:you know what, I have always had such good luck finding decent human beings who were interested in working on projects in forums. But generally, we get a large number of "No really, I'll do *{BLANK}* for you some day" comments, which isnt honest, and generally is a crock.
Might be true in your case, might not. Doesn't matter.
I somewhat agree that numerous posts have jumped on people posting in the volunteer section, however, we really need a "posting guideline" for this section. That way it would be clear that making offers of money, fame, women, large piles of credits, etc are generally (if not always) a guilt-ridden attempt at justifying asking for help.
The simple truth is, in many cases, the sites are cool enough to justify working on them.
As a game engine programmer, I do take offense at the comment you make at the end of your rant.. it implies that someone that knows PHP can't possibly be at the same skill level - which is entirely untrue.
Take your rudeness elsewhere.

this is kinda fun going back and forth like this
This is good to let off steam. Buddy listen, I make 175k a year for a company that I started and have been running now. I have worked on more projects than you know. I am not here to brag I just think it's f**ked up that I get reamed for looking for some help. Let me ask you this, when you got your whompin 55k job did you have to apply for it? Maybe show some samples of your work? Well, either way I know you coder guys have your own little click going on so whatever. I am not trying to make enemies here honestly, and I just want to go on record as saying that I not here to scam anyone. I run a legitimate business and was looking for legitimate help. Would you have rather that I said I was going to pay someone and then not do it? I did post in the volunteer forum dude. If you don't support volunteer efforts then please take this forum down so that unsuspecting people don't make the same mistake I did. Thinking that there might just be someone out there who doesn't make 55k a year sitting in from of a forum all day. So please, a little understanding here that you guys don't need to be d*cks, you could just say no or not respond. That was called flaming.

It's very simple.
You are not a charity or some other kind of community or personal site where a programmer might want to contribute to a worthy cause or a common interest.
You are (or are employed by) a business which will benefit financially from this work. Your intention that a programmer should further your business aims without pay reveals a breathtaking arrogance and lack of respect for other people. Either this is a deliberate attempt to rip someone off - for which I have a responsibility to protect our members - or you simply do not realise what you are doing. I'm not sure which is worse.
You might at least have the decency to promise payment then disappear off up the swannee when the job is handed over. At least that wouldn't insult our intelligence.
I ask you again: I need some design work for my own business. I can't afford to pay you now but I can give you a credit and could have many paid opportunities for you in the future.
Still not tempted?
Hmmm. I've got another offer for you. I have life savings totalling $3 million pounds but my bank account has been impounded due to political persecution in my native Scotland. My wife Senga and my dear children are being tortured in prison as we speak. I need the help of a foreign national to transfer funds out of the country and I can offer you a generous 10% for your kind help. First you must send a mere $1,000 and your bank account details: this will allow me to bribe the necessary officials and transfer my £3 millions to your account.
Please hurry. Time is running out.

If you have such a successful business, how come you have no money.
Anyway, none of my business i suppose...
Firstly, we don't need to use language from the gutter here, it's not big and it's not clever.
I think, when asking for people to volunteer work, you need to give more detail about the project to entice people to jump on board.
As you are a legitimate comapny, you could have gave some background, how long you been up and running, name some of the projects you have worked on in the past.
This would all make it seem more feasable that you would maybe push more work our way.
And why can none of your developers do this for you?
