About one month ago several brilliant individuals came together to fill a niche of services that will span the globe. The outlet: a social network looking to the brink of technological innovation. Market
research and ties to New York's finest universities show an unprecedented demand for us and our product. Why? Because the time is right, we are the best and know the playing field, and because New York is only a stepping stone. We are looking for one more brilliant individual to join our startup team.

If you appreciate the strengths of PHP, XP programming, postgres, continuous integration, MVC/Model 2, rapid feature development, the potential for immense growth, and a chance to work on a truly phenomenal project, then we want you.

If you have experience with the above, please contact Yuriy Krylov at ykrylov@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you. Thank you for your time and attention!

This sounds like a paying job. Would you like me to move this to the job hunt forum?

At this moment this is not a paying gig. All current team members are volunteering their efforts. We are looking for one more to join the start-up team.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Sincerely,
Yuriy Krylov

So unprecendented that you can't pay. Interesting..

I am also surprised that you are not prepared to pay your prgrammers for what appears to be a commercial venture - please correct me if I'm wrong.

You are asking for an impressive skill set. Experienced programmers are unlikely to be seduced by hype alone (you don't master the advanced programming techniques you mention by being stupid). Pay is much more persuasive.

If someone is offering a job and does not say anything about a payment for your work then it always means volunteer's only :$

The prototype we are developing has commercial interest. As a start-up venture in its early pre-Venture Capital stages, the founders and team are volunteering their efforts. Should the launch be on schedule and feature development go according to plan, all participating parties will be adequately compensated.

The skillset required would go into the beta development while we are still in early stages of alpha. Proficiency with PHP4 and MySQL or Postgres would do. We are looking for a talented developer to join in our vision and serve as creative input to the team as a whole. This is not a request for an Independant Contractor.

This is a serious business venture, therfore a risk. Time and efforts are an investment. Thank you all for your feedback!

To put it mildly, I don't believe it is ethical to transfer part of that risk to your programmers.

Let me give you an example. One of my neighbours works in the construction industry and is managing the building of a new chemical plant. The company concerned may or may not make a profit from the venture - as it happens I suspect they will - but they wouldn't get their site built at all if they asked the construction company to do it for free with a promise of payment later, maybe, if they make a profit - and if they keep their promises.

Why should a programmer accept anything different? Why would I want to accept any risk at all that I might not get paid?

If you were offering programmers a percentage stake in the company, that might be different. Otherwise, any risks ought to be the sole property of the partners to the venture.

I couldn't agree more with McGruff.

We are most willing to discuss "stake" terms on an individual basis. This of course depends on the involvement of the developer. All agreements would be notarized and legally binding.

Offering a share of the rewards as well as the risks might tempt someone, if you can convince them that you have a decent chance of success.

Best of luck.
