Looking for volunteers - Excellent idea!

Post by Blade556 »

Hey there people!

How are ya? Great! Well, if any of you PHP coders have the time, I have a small request for those who would like to help me out.

See, I have no knowledge of PHP. Mainly because with a full time job I have no time to learn it anymore, as I would like to.

But that aside, here is my idea: Create a link exchange. People submit their sites, what is involved on it, and a screenshot of their index page.

It's an awesome idea, and it's way better that any search engine out there. Why? Because through the search function it lists only the sites that have registered a keyword matching or partial to the search query, rather than just finding keywords on various websites.

What I have in mind is this:

User connects to the Link Exchange. Likes the idea, want's to register his website (Free, by the way, no paying crap for top results). Fills out the form, which includes his website name, the URL for the name, short description, upload a picture of your index (Which would be shrunk to a set size, and linked to the full size image), and a Username & Pass for updating and editing the information. His site details are saved in his own little directory (Which is created upon registering), inside text files.

I'm trying to utilize as little actual graphic files as possible, maybe a site rating bar, but thats about as much as I would like to have. The top banner is, of course, a must, but the rest would just be colored tables. This not only makes it 56k friendly, it's slightly easier to read.

As well, the Font should be fairly small, but not unreadable. I'm thinking Tahoma, size 2 (In HTML sizing), so I think that's actually about size 10.

Colouring should stick to Red and Black. My banner will be that colouring as well. If any other colours would look nicer along with those, they shouldn't be too contrasting.

My one concern is whether the program should use a database or not. I'm pretty sure you can do this purely on PHP alone, but maybe SQL programming may be involved. It shouldn't be so dissimilar to PHPATM, but I could be wrong.

Anyways, who's up to the challenge? There is really no pay involved, although I may resort to that if nobody wants to do anything with this. It's an awesome idea, and you would be commended greatly for your efforts.

Thanks a million for reading this! You can email me at discipline_this_biatch@hotmail.com

What is so exciting about your idea? To me it looks like as yet another directory site. There are hundreds and thousands of them all around the net, http://dmoz.com and http://yahoo.com just to name few...

Dmoz is what would similarily represent my site, but what I'm more talking about (And this was originally going to be released to the volunteers only) is a site on ROM sites.

Nothing big, but eventually it would get big. And it's not like the top-100 emu or anything like that, but rather think of Dmoz JUST for ROM sites.

I personally think it's a good idea, considering everybody is looking for ROM's for the newest systems. This is just a better way to advertise your ROM site.

Any more takers? By the way, I didn't know that site existed :P

I'd be *very* interested in trying to write something that grabbed a webpage, parsed it as HTML, and rendered a screenshot as a jpg..

But thats several orders of magnitude more difficult than what you're suggesting.

if you are using kde it's not that much work to script it :) :)

just search for a DCOP tutorial and get started ;) (i would fe presume your script launches konqueror... surfs to the right url.. and makes a screenshot with kpaint)
