AVLabs Design Recruiting Dedicated PHP Programmer

Post by WretchedWyx »

Greetings,

I'm the webmaster of AVLabs Design. I have myself spread very thin right now, across several projects. Some are related to AVLabs, some are not. The site is very early in development right now, but when it's completed we will be offering tutorials, resource downloads, the whole works. One of the the things PHP related that I need help with, is the administration backend I have planned. There are other things that will need regular maintenance as well.

Without diving into to much detailed (until requested), I am wanting to recruit a dedicated and long time member to the AVLabs team. Besides offering the above mentioned items, there is also going to be a store that offers stock photography and web templates. I also run into freelance jobs every now and then, and sometimes PHP programming is required- which I usually have to outsource to meet deadlines. If I had a PHP programmer on the team, this could be kept internal.

I'm not promising paid work, but it can come through on occasion. Though, the frequency of work can't be pinned down. Basically consider this a "for-fun" thing, with the off chance of getting some work passed your way. The part of the AVNetwork that is handeling all the work is lying dormant right now, and won't get any attention until AVLabs Design (the community, resources, fun stuff...) is up on it's feet, and is better known around the net. Hard work yes, but I'm this is my dream.

I just need people to help me! I'm also looking for other team members for other positions. I won't go into detail about that, but if you know people or are interested in joining the team yourself, speak up. I'm a really friendly guy (despite my username :P) and am very laid back. We (the current AVLabs team- 3 people) have a lot of projects planned, one of them being a game engine/game. Which, coincedently may end up using PHP.

Anyways, I appreciate any feedback on this, and will gladly answer any questions. I hope I have not offended anyone with anything I said. For some reason, the same content I wrote above has made people angry in other places, such as Usenet groups. Not my intention.

Not so much a community page, as a community area. Currently the plan is to have a wiki for many, many things. The first few (which are already in place, under-developed, and being used for internal stuff) will be things related to game design. Then we have web design. Stuff for the basics- HTML, CSS, etc. Then more advanced stuff such as PHP, Javascript, and various webmaster tools such as phpMyAdmin. And that's just the wiki. Once it gets to this point though, the current wiki will be abstracted to a team only wiki, to keep team related stuff internal.

Then we have concepts for a couple of systems relating to photo galleries (the art kind, for photographers), as well as a co-op design system. The co-op design system would be a sort of CVS/SVN system, where community members can work together as a team on a web project, for fun. Really awesome projects would be showcased, and if the team wanted, the project could be put up on the AVStore, with the team getting 90% of the profits from sales. There may also be competitions relating to this.

There are other small things too, like member personal pages (a basic one page deal, with a blog, favorite links, user stats for the forums, wiki, co-op projects, etc), voting for community leaders (basically moderators), and a suggestions box for new content.

Now, there is also a project in the concept stages... So conceptual it hurts. It's relating to the game development stuff, but would also need the help of a PHP programmer. And it's also tied into the community. I can go into detail on this also if you'd like, but there's not much to it. And it's very far off .

So, as you can see there is alot of stuff to do. I could use all the help available, and especially need help with planning some of the stuff from people experienced in certain areas of development/design. I just realized I haven't posted any links yet... Keep in mind all this stuff is very early versions. I've had a lot of people complain about the colors, and text sizes. So those are going to change.

My project ztml already has the tools that you could use to build all those things you described. We could work together and make this a joint project. Although my project is opensource but you are free to use it anyway you want. I have a partner working with me on ztml. He is a designer so he could help you with the site’s layout.

This is an interesting offer indeed. I'll look into that, and get back to you. I would gladly except the aid of another designer. I wouldn't mind having 10+ on the team, and working inter-coop projects. I'm not sure what help I could offer to the ztml project, aside from graphic design, suggestions, and beta-testing.

Another thing is, I have such a fine degree of concept for all the stuff I mentioned in my first two posts, that I'm not sure what would be more difficult- writing the systems from the ground up, or modifying an existing one. Your thoughts? I'm not too worried about speed (though it is nice) except when it comes to the game project part. Though I'm assuming this system will definitely have to built from the ground up.

Thanks for the replies so far, and I hope they keep coming in! I'd definitely like to talk to you about this more in-depth ztml, so if you have msn/yahoo let me know in a PM (I use trillian, so either one works).

Just as you have said that your proposal has angered people. I too have faced this type of reaction when I offered help with ztml. Somehow people look at this as motive with self-interest. Indeed I have motive but with no evil intend. With that said, I hope we do able to work together.

The type of help I’m looking for is exactly what you have offered – design, suggestions, testing. It would be great if you could help out with development too.

As I have mentioned, ztml provides tools where you could use to build webpages. These webpages can include functions such as managing news or blog contents, calendar, forum, gallery, and so on. As you can see, if you have a system with those functions in mind, you could put one together quite easily using ztml. My partner and I currently building such a system called ezPortal where you could set up a site with most of popular features such as those mentioned above without much work. If the functions you need are not in ztml, they could be included by developing add-ons. So you may not need to developing anything from the ground up.

If you want to discuss this further, I could set up a site for that. We could use the function such as forum or blog for the discussion and notes can be organized using the documentor feature, which is very similar to PHP documentor.
